Walk-in cooler too warm: what to do

A walk-in that is climbing has product inside. Protect the product and get the unit looked at at the same time. Here is what to do first.

The short answer

A walk-in that is climbing has product inside, so do two things at once: protect the product and get the unit looked at. The usual causes are a door that is not sealing, a dirty condenser coil, a frozen evaporator or a failed fan or compressor part.

What you can check yourself

  • Keep the door shut as much as you can.
  • Move what you can to a unit that is holding temperature.
  • Check that the door closes fully and the gasket seals.
  • Look at the condenser: is it blocked with dust or grease?
  • Note the temperature and how long it has been climbing.

What gets checked first

  • Door gasket and closer
  • Condenser coil and fan
  • Evaporator, defrost and fans
  • Compressor and its start components

Repair or replace?

Commonly a repair. The estimate is free.
