The short answer
Most calls go faster when you have run a few quick checks and have a few facts ready. The checks take two minutes and sometimes fix it. The facts let Don tell you on the phone what to expect.
The quick checks
- Thermostat on the right mode, with the set point past the room temperature.
- Breaker for the indoor and the outdoor unit. Reset once at most.
- Filter: clean or packed?
- Outdoor unit: is the fan turning, is anything blocking it?
- Drain line and pan: any water?
- Vents: open, with the air actually moving?
What to have ready
- What the unit is doing, in one sentence
- Where it is: the town, and house, store or building
- How long it has been doing it
- The brand, if the label is easy to see
- A number to call back on
Repair or replace?
Many repairs come down to a part. The estimate is free.
When to call now
If you smell gas, leave the house first. If a unit is icing, grinding or tripping the breaker, turn it off.
